Kailua Bay – magic water playground
It really has not changed much since Rick and Randy Naish became World Champion in the Hobie Cat and Robby Naish and Pete Cabrinha started Windsurfing on Ten Cate Boards with teak wishbone booms. The beach has gone slightly, but Flat Island and the water are still the same.
One of the most magic things about this bay are the Honu (green sea turtles). They are very gentle, about 1 meter long and pop their heads up everywhere in the bay. They reach 80 years of age, so chances are pretty high that the one you are looking at is actually a bit older than you. We have had the most magic moments when snorkeling in the reef here in Lanikai, where we would float together with the turtles for 10 to 20 minutes. They looked at us, accepted us as their friend, and swam with us from reef to reef, not a bit scared of us being underneath or beside them. In the Hawaiian myths this means that the ocean has welcomed you and that good things will happen to you. It is an overwhelming experience to see these turtles float right next to you.
Kailua Bay has some of the most beautiful beach homes and has no beach crowds at all. This is probably one of the reasons why Heidi Klum and Seal decided to have their third baby here. The other day we saw them on the beach, Sisley got a big smile from Seal, and their two little kids smiled at Robinson and Sienna.
The bay is just a big playground for watersports, no matter what the day brings, there is always something you can do:
windsurf, kitesurf or sail when there is wind;
surf, stand up paddle board, boogie board, body surf or outrigger canoe surf when the waves are up;
swim, kayak, canoe, or just hang out on the beach when it is calm.
